Baraja: "tHE TEAM kePT going AND COMPETED UNTIL THE END"
The Valencia CF coach talks after the 2-2 result against Deportivo Alavés
Valencia CF coach Voro González talked about the Matchday 21 defeat to Athletic Club in his post-match press conference.
Cavani
Cavani has a muscle injury. He immediately noticed it in the back of his leg. We will assess what it is.
Winning
Of course, we need to win a game and we are on the right path. Today we were closer to winning and things that happen in football punished us a lot. The team were very focused at all times, there were a few details that went array and Athletic Club took advantage.
Our attitude was very good. We have tried to attack through the middle and be more solid defensively. Overall, I think that we didn't deserve to lose, but that’s football and it's about scoring.
We are sad, but we have seen some improvement and we have to compete the same way to be able to win games.
Improvement
Of course, it's worrying not to win, but we did a good job today. In the end, a quick transition and a bad ball out were punished heavily, and we had many chances. We competed well against opponents who dominate the second ball, and we matched them and even surpassed them in that.
In terms ofintensity we have improved. It seems that it is counterproductive to say that we have improved when we have lost, but that’s what happened. We know where we have to improve and from there, things can go either way.
His position
The club haven’t told me anything. I keep working and looking for solutions. The club will do the work that they see fit, and I think that’s right. I have always said that I am here to help, and the coaching staff and I will try to improve the things that we believe the team must improve to be in a position to win any game. If the club consider that they should look for a coach, it is the club's decision. I'm not going to be any problem. I have said this from day one.
The fans
What can get us out of our situation is what we do on the pitch, in training and in games. The team are in a relegation situation and that already makes it difficult for us to manage all this with the players, and logically we understand that people are upset, but I have always said that we respect that each person expresses their passion in the way they consider fit, but it is also true that we need the fans.
Today the fans were behind the team, and the team have to give more so that the fans support them, but we are in a very difficult situation.
Today there are good signs in terms of the performance compared to other games. We didn’t win, but the team put in a lot of effort and lost for specific reasons and because sometimes this happens in football. Athletic didn’t generate enough to score two goals, and we generated a lot. We lost the ball bringing it out, which should not happen, and we were punished even more in this very delicate situation that we are in.
A difficult situation
It’s the most difficult situation of the previous seven times I’ve come in. When the club make the decision and tell me that I can help, I no longer think about what comes next. I step forward because of my responsibility and try to find solutions.
It is not an ordeal. It is not an easy process, because I am not the typical coach who forgets if things go wrong and the club change coach. If the club change coach, and they can do that, I will continue with the same concern that we have to save us from relegation. There are many games to go, but we need to win and score points and today we were very close. Now we are focused on the match against Getafe.
His future
When I talk about the club I am not going to single out anyone and the club will make the decision that they must make. They will be evaluating the best option and if that involves changing the coach, I have no problem with that.
Before I had another position that does not have any sporting component and now it does, as a coach. The situation is difficult and you suffer. The other day after the loss to Girona I was obviously sad. I’m even more hurt today because the team were close to winning and I think it was an unfair result, but in the end it was 1-2 and the points were lost.
Protests
I'm the team's coach. I am not here to evaluate what is not my responsibility. I am here to talk about the team and tell you what I think we have to do to improve. My role is this and I talk about the issues that concern me at this time.
His contractual situation
I have said that I am not a classic coach who comes and goes at the end of his contract, because this has happened before and when I finish I return to my job at the club. Other times it has gone well, other times less well and other times badly. This is a situation in which the players and coaching staff seek to enhance what we lack. Whenever change has occurred it is because things are not going well. And when I finish here I will return to my job, regardless of whether we win or lose. Things are clear from the start.
